3 Tips to Take Charge of Your Health and Wellness Right Now

This week on the Moms with a Purpose podcast I spoke with Certified Clinical Nutritionist Lahana Vigliano. After studying to be a doctor while also working and raising tiny humans, Lahana lost her passion for medicine. She had to take a break and, in that time, she found a new passion. Lahana learned about balancing medicine and nutrition to help people build better individual health plans. 

After her bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Science and a post-graduate program to be a Certified Clinical Nutritionist, Lahana launched Nuvitru Wellness in 2015. Since then, she’s continued her education to work on her Master’s in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine. Lahana continues to help people reclaim their health and build better lives. 

Here are some of the tips she talked about during our interview. Use these guidelines to start taking control of your own health and building a more balanced health plan for yourself. 

1. What works for everyone else may not work for you. 

The claims to lose 50lbs in three months with some miracle diet, product, or program run rampant on social media. Lahana talked about how many people come to her and they look healthy or they have big muscles but, internally, their health is in chaos. 

Even if you have the same condition as a friend, you may present differently. It’s important to listen to your own body and make decisions based on what you know about yourself. 

2. Balance is key. 

Cutting out carbs isn’t going to be sustainable for most people. Intermittent fasting leads to disordered eating for many who try it. According to the CDC, there are over 300 toxins in human samples, as in blood, urine, and even breastmilk. And those are just the ones we know about. You can’t avoid every single one. 

Ask yourself, “can I kill it?”, or “can I grow it?” If the answer to either of these is “no,” then the food is probably processed. Focus on more wholesome foods. This doesn’t always mean it’s labeled as “organic” or “healthy.” Use your best judgement and your instincts.

3. Be wary of under-eating. 

One thing Lahana said she saw with many women and mothers was under-eating. As moms, we forget to eat while we’re working and taking care of kids all day. We live off the remains of chicken nuggets and mac n cheese or we eat out of boredom. We get used to these patterns and we lose the ability to notice hunger cues. We stop listening to our bodies. 

Under-eating affects everything from hormone production to energy levels, brain fog, and a host of other health problems. Set alarms or keep a food diary to remind yourself when to eat and to make sure you eat enough all day. 

Change Your Mindset About Self Care

We hear about self care all the time as moms but rarely do we actually make time for it on a regular basis. One thing you need to remind yourself of all the time is that you are not selfish for taking care of yourself! Making time for your wellness is essential, not optional. 

Include your whole family in your efforts to improve your health and wellness. If you’re learning about new foods and eating better, include the kids in researching and trying out new recipes. Include your partner or your friends in new exercise efforts or go to a class together. 

You don’t have to put other things aside to maintain your health. Once you change your mindset to be inclusive about your efforts instead of thinking that it’s selfish, you’ll notice it’s a lot easier to listen to your body and make better choices.
